The Hidden Power of Downtime

Downtime. I’m sorry, can you repeat that word again? I thought you said downtime. You must be thinking of the wrong person.

It seems like a lofty concept to have downtime but there is a hidden power found deep within this small pocket of time that is vastly under-utilized.

I refer to this extended time as Downtime and is the third part of the Rest Phase in The Energy Cycle – Sleep / Breaks / Downtime.

We have to sleep but we don’t have to take breaks or downtime.

And I want to be clear out of the gate, Downtime is NOT a break.

Here’s the progression:
1. Breaks – Micro = Seconds / Mini = Minutes / Macro = many minutes (15-30) or chunks of time
2. Downtime = Hours
3. Sabbath = Half or Ideally Full Day

What is Downtime?

Official definition – a time of reduced activity or inactivity.

Read that again. a REDUCED activity or inactivity. Easy to say, difficult to actually implement.

But as you may know, I seem to make my own definitions, for example a break means: Move the Body / Rest the Mind.

My definition of Downtime:

Time to Be NOT to Be On

Most of us are always on. Always going. Always in Production Mode. Oh how I know, I’m the one usually cracking the whip to get more done!

Time to be means, well, we’re not on and can just be ourselves. Hair down and feet up. Human Beings not Human Doings.

Downtime is something you look forward to engaging in – a sense of anticipation.

Downtime is not a waste of time but planned time – not looking at what you’re losing or not getting done but what you’re gaining and how much more you’ll get done will make all the difference in the hidden power of downtime.

Ironically, Downtime takes time.

We need to plan that it will take a few minutes to begin to connect with downtime. Our minds are usually still fully engaged in the last task.

The Ultimate Goal of Downtime = Feeling Refreshed

This means the whole point of taking this chunk of time out of my schedule is I will feel refreshed. Now, doesn’t that sound more appealing? A worthy end game?

Downtime is also margin, the additional space in our lives that allows us to breathe. We’re good at over scheduling and sucking any possible space in our lives.

This means avoiding scheduling everything back to back. Adding margin lowers our stress and allows us to have a more natural rhythm to our day which ironically allows us to be more productive in the end.

Margins are intentional and don’t just happen. We need to implement this needed space into our schedule.

Why Don’t We Take Downtime?

1.  I don’t have the time especially extended time -this is easily the top reason cited on why we don’t take downtime. It requires a commitment to time.

2. Downtime feels unproductive – believe it or not, doing nothing is difficult especially to an over-achiever who is always used to doing something.

3. Downtime is a luxury I just can’t afford – maybe when I reach a certain level but certainly not now. This is my time to hustle not to kick back and relax.

4. Downtime feels lazy – it’s an unusual feeling to experience downtime especially when others are working and I’m just laying around doing n0thing.

5. We downplay the value of downtime -and this gets to the heart of the issue, we just don’t see the benefits or possibly never experienced the benefits of downtime

Question. When was the last time you had a half day off or Full day of work? (May have been a holiday) What did it feel like? Did you look forward to it? Benefit from it?

If we’re honest, we really enjoyed it. But it was almost forced upon us. Why not gain from this natural rhythm by adding downtime as part of our week?

What Do You Do During Downtime?

Well you don’t do…

  • Work – normal day job stuff
  • Things that feel like work – cleaning the house / bills / anything you dread

You do…

1. Escape from the Norm – we know the norm all too well but we must escape it and for an extended period of time to benefit from downtime

2. Play – huh? Seriously, play. Nothing beats that childlike time of not having a care in the world and enjoying recess or going outside just to play. It’s in you, I promise. Maybe hire one of your kids to show you how to do this gift in life again.

3. Rest – this may be the first area most of us need because we’re just plain tired. This is relaxing by slowing down to catching up on sleep. It could be in a form of a nap or just allowing our bodies to catch up with our minds.

4. Daydream– this means allowing your mind to roam free. Nothing specific to solve or work through but just think about whatever you want to think about (that is relaxing) and doesn’t feel like work. You will be amazed at some of the ideas that come out of daydreaming.

Ideas to Find Downtime.

1. Find an Interest – what would you like to learn? Play? What do or did you like to do that brought you joy? Stress release? Something you’re good at? – draw / paint / build / create / write. You have interests so rekindle them. Here’s a hint: when have you said “I’d love to do this if I had the time” and there’s your answer.

2. Find an Adventure – many of us are adventurous and may struggle just lying around the house. But an adventure? I’m all for it! Consider hiking, taking half or full day trip. How about something spur of the moment that all you needed was a block of time? Here’s your chance.

3. Find a Luxury – spoiling ourselves seems like an after thoughts but could be the perfect starting point for downtime. Schedule a massage, manicure, facial and just enjoy being pampered. See how you feel afterwards and you’ll have a completely different outlook on downtime.

4. Find a Rabbit Trail – what activity such as a book or TV show do you want or could get lost in? For my wife and I was the TV show, LOST. For me personally it was the show, Breaking Bad. There are rabbit trails out there you can just chase and see where it will take you.

5. Find an Activity – Date Night with a Spouse. Family Game or Movie Night. Attend a sporting event. All three are personal favorites.

Now, sometimes Downtime may need to be alone. You simply need to recharge by yourself. But other times, Downtime may need people you enjoy – spouse / family / friends.

The key is knowing what YOU need to feel refreshed and allows you time to be and not to be on.

Downtime Challenges.

Yet of course anything of value is going to have its challenges and downtime is nothing different. You must find the hidden power of downtime.

1. Challenging career / season – the reality is life has its winter seasons where life is simply challenging and difficult. But, if you know and accept the true benefit of downtime, you’ll schedule it in to actually make this season not only more bearable but productive and possibly enjoyable along the way.

2. Having kids and the busyness of your family –  this is my world ALL the time with five kids. School, sports, church, events. The schedule is part of our life but all the more reason to schedule in downtime to have energy for the family who matter the most to me.

3. Your wiring – your temperament may be go go go and downtime is asking you to stop stop stop. Well, kinda. Remember, Downtime is asking us to be not to be on and that may mean being active. You choose what allows you to feel refreshed and overcome this challenge.

But how do you implement Downtime…?

Downtime Strategies.

1. Plan For It – This is the WHEN Downtime will happen. It needs to be scheduled. I know that sounds like an oxymoron but what gets scheduled gets done and we need it to be a priority. Schedule the block to be not to be on. Here’s a Pro Tip: Think Small on Weeknights and Think Large on Weekends. Find something small you can do each night for downtime to give you some needed mental rest. Then hit is large and really do it big on the weekends when you have larger blocks of time.

2. Be Prepared For It -This is the WHAT will happen in Downtime. It may require set up. You may need to do some research, order tickets or items. You also need to go into Downtime realizing it will take awhile to get into true Downtime.

3. Look Forward To It – Nothing beats anticipation to build excitement. Kids are GREAT at this one. And when you look forward to something, you’re also less likely to delay or cancel.

In the End…

Downtime may be foreign to you right now in your life. Don’t give up on the concept even if you’re already begging for more time in every area of your life.

Remember, you need more energy NOT more time.

And taking Downtime is exactly you need to regain your energy and hence part of the Energy Cycle.

Find the time to be not always to be on and leverage this gift of feeling refreshed. If you search, you’ll find the hidden power of downtime and be amazed you existed this long without it. Try me.

THE #1 REQUESTED PRESENTATION:

THE ELITE ROAD WARRIOR: How to Master the Business Travel Life Without Losing What Matters

Life on the road is challenging and complex. Those who don’t travel for work only see the glamour of new cities, hotels, and eating out. They don’t see the long hours, travel delays, meeting cancellations, and being away from those you love back home.

Yet many business travelers just “do their road thing” with little to no thought. They make their plans, pack their bags, show up, and come home—usually bringing home another pound, some exhaustion, and possibly burnout. Their productivity suffers as well as their health.

It doesn’t have to be that way. Business travelers can excel on the road and not compromise what matters most in their lives.

In this unfiltered, solution-rich presentation, you will learn:

  • The three biggest challenges in the life of a business traveler
  • The secret shame of high-performing business travelers
  • The #1 fear of business travelers on the road
  • Managing the two strongest work tensions
  • Six energy habits needed on the road to become elite

NOTE: While the primary title is designed for business travelers, the content of this presentation can be customized and tailored to your audience. By request, the title can be adjusted and the content customized to speak specifically to your event audience.

Training Workshops

Training Workshops are a great opportunity to invest in your group or team. Conducted in a more casual setting, they will empower your group or team by giving them the strategies and tools to not just survive on the road but really thrive and be at their best.

You’re already doing a great job of training on your product or services, so let me add to that by helping your Road Warriors to be more effective in three key focus areas:

Your work

Your health

Your home life

Since the road can be challenging to your business traveler’s productivity, health, and connections with those back home, we offer proven solutions that will challenge, motivate, and inspire each participant to master the business travel life.

Why Consider a Training Workshop?

Employees who travel a lot begin to develop road routines that too often become more about survival and limitations on their results than about thriving and leveraging the road. Consider a Training Workshop for the following reasons:

  • minimize turnover of your business travelers and the expense of the rehiring and retraining process that is incredibly costly to your company, your customers, and the rest of your team.
  • eliminate unneeded stress caused on the road from work requirements, ineffective productivity, travel, unhealthy eating and little exercise, not to mention disconnection from those back home.
  • maximize results because your Road Warrior has training from a business traveler performance expert and resources specific to their needs on the road.

Who Are Training Workshops Geared For?

How do you know if a Training Workshop will work for your team? If anyone on your team that travels for any part of their role, then a Training Workshop will be exactly what they need. These include:

  • business travelers who’ve been trained on your product or services but have yet to be trained on the three focus areas of Work, Health, and Home Life.
  • team members who are not producing in a way that the company or even the employee wants from their time on the road.
  • new hires who need to develop great habits on the road from the start of their employment with you.

Note: It’s common to have my Training Workshop during quarterly, half year, or annual sales meetings, team meetings, or team-building events.

My training methodology uses the following process:

Presentation - Introduction to the new content in a teaching format.
Reflection - Implementation of the new content into the participant’s life.
Discussion - Feedback from others in a small group setting on how best to execute the participant’s plan on the road .
Evaluation - Professional feedback from Bryan Paul Buckley (reserved for the full and half day options) or team leader (quarter day option)

The Training Workshop’s premise is found in the Six Energy Habits Framework:

There are three lengths of Training Workshops. Each one can be catered to your requested needs and preferences. Here are the standard packages:

Full Day

This is our most powerful and comprehensive offering and includes the following outcome objectives:

  • Focusing in detail on all six Energy Habits and how to implement each one to master the business travel life.
  • Learning how to move from an Existing Road Warrior to an Elite Road Warrior.
  • Avoiding the secret shame of high-performing business travelers.
  • Learning the three biggest challenges in the life of a business traveler.

Half Day

This is our most popular offering and includes the following outcome objectives:

  • Focusing in detail on three of the six Energy Habits and how to implement these three into the business travel life
  • Avoiding the secret shame of high-performing business travelers.
  • Learning the three biggest challenges in the life of a business traveler.

Quarter Day

This is an introduction to the Elite Road Warrior content that still offers a big bang for the limited time available. The outcome objectives are as follows:

  • Learning the three biggest challenges in the life of a business traveler.
  • Receiving a brief introduction to the six Energy Habits Framework with a focus on one and how to implement it on the road.

Any Additional Options?

Often what results from the above Training Workshop packages will include one or more of the following:

  • Individual coaching for the team leader and/or team members.
  • Road Warrior Recharge Monthly Online Training for your team through the membership site (Note: corporate licenses are available upon request).
  • Additional Training Workshops that expand on the previous Training Workshop are needed for new business travel team members.

Next Steps?

If you’re like me, you have additional questions or special needs/requests you’d like to discuss. So, I suggest one of the following:

  • Contact us with the form below with any questions and someone will reach out to you within one business day .
  • Schedule a pre-event planning call - this is a no-obligation call that allows us to discuss the needs of your event and how I can best serve you and your team.

Now Let’s Do This!

About Me – The Full Story

Bryan
PAUL
Buckley's
Story

I’m Bryan Paul Buckley – a business travel performance expert.

I work with road warriors who want to be challenged, motivated, and inspired to leverage not limit the road to be elite in what matters most in their lives.

I’m a husband of one and father of five (buy four, get one free in Chicago) who absolutely adores my wife and kids. But life the life of a Road Warrior effects especially them.

I want to not only stay as connected as possible with them while I’m gone but also come home with the energy needed for wife (who often needs a break), my kids (who missed their Dad), and my close friends.

THE BACK STORY

I started traveling at a young age with my father who was a Road Warrior. Then when I had my chance, I would travel for research and would speak all over the country. I didn’t have a care in the world, and like most people in their twenties, I felt invincible. The late nights, bad food, and lack of movement were for “everyone else” who didn’t have my drive and energy level.

I felt the only thing that could stop me was not having enough time. I pushed so hard. Even though I was achieving results, I was not focused. My desire to show others I could make it on my own led me to take on almost any and every challenge that came my way … and that soon would prove to have disastrous repercussions.

SOMETHING IS WRONG

Decades later, my lifestyle was that of a professional business traveler. I was eating the best of the king’s food and drinking the best of the king’s wine, but in February of 2011, my body started kicking back with some unusual symptoms.

On my 40th birthday, my wife gave me the gift of a one-way ticket to the doctor for a full panel of tests. (She’s generous like that.)

Not knowing what to do with me, they ran extensive tests. The good news was they couldn’t find anything wrong. The bad news was they couldn’t find anything wrong.

But I knew in my heart that something was definitely wrong … and then I willingly chose to ignore that feeling. I had too much to do and not enough time to do it in, so I went back to business (travel, that is) as usual. I hit the road harder, and my early inner warning signal was quickly ignored. I showed them. Like so many other business travelers, I live by this quote:

If you want to do something, you’ll find a way.
If you don’t, you’ll find an excuse. - Jim Rohn

If you’re like me and willing to justify avoiding something you really don’t want to do, then you’ll understand what I did next. The truth was I didn’t want to stop and rest. My identity was in my drive and producing results. If I stopped, I thought I would lose ground and ultimately lose. I hate losing.

I pushed it even harder, traveling an insane number of miles for business. I increased my pace and responsibility. I lived in the moment and was willing to sacrifice everything—including my health and family.

THE COST OF THE RESULTS

Then it happened.

I hit the wall, and this time it hit back, and I didn’t get up quickly. In March of 2015, my business travel life finally began to catch up with me. All of my Energizer Bunny energy was gone. Everything that came naturally to me began to take more energy, and I began to crash—and crash hard. It didn’t happen all of a sudden, but my pace (which was one was my marks of success) and my stress levels, were ultimately the cause of my demise.

I found myself unable to get up in the morning like I always had; the hours before everyone arose were “my time,” and I had never missed using them. I started sleeping as much as I could on the road. My breathing was off. My face was constantly flushed. I would get body aches that felt like the flu … without the flu. Headaches led to migraines. My mind would shut down to the point I couldn’t concentrate or even read. It was brutal on my pride and on me.

And I wasn’t the only one affected.

My wife got more than her fill of this madness. Like she didn’t already feel like a single mother when I was away, now I was completely useless to her when I was home—I was one more person she now had to take care of. C’mon, Buckley.

Those were dark days in our home filled with confusion, resentment, and hopelessness. The hard-driving me was becoming a thing of the past. But how? I was only 45 years old! Although I still felt like I was getting more done than most people, it was not at my pace and at my energy level.

I went back to the doctor, this time with a completely different attitude: one of humility and openness. Over the next few weeks, I underwent extensive medical tests that were exhausting, stressful, and expensive. But I needed to know and understand what was going on in my body.

This time the doctors knew something was wrong, but they just weren’t sure what to do next. I was encouraged to learn that nothing major was wrong since my family tree included a legacy of heart disease and cancer. I was relieved, yet still tired most of the time and unable to run races, work out, and push it like I always had anytime I’d wanted to in the past.

I was officially concerned and worried. I knew I had so much more in me … but not the energy to produce the results I wanted, and especially not in the acceptable (to me) turnaround time I was used to.

I’d hit a wall and needed a new fuel. I’d been using cheap gas and not doing the maintenance needed on a high-performance car. I was treating my Ferrari like a cheap, beat-up old Camry work car. Repair work had consisted of “do the minimum and get me back on the road.” I needed to quickly learn how to maintain this gift of a car for the long haul.

Years and then decades of doing it “my way” was wrecking my body. Pushing this hard without really taking care of my body had finally caught up to me. The cost of getting the results “my way” was forcing me to pay a price I didn’t want to pay … and oh, I would pay for a long time.

Everything was going to have to change. I needed to do things differently. My health and family literally depended on it.

THE DIAGNOSIS

Over the next few months, I was diagnosed with HPA Axis Dysfunction. Translation: I was running my body into the ground. My stress and pace had damaged my nervous and endocrine systems, which produced my energy. Something had to change, or it would literally shut down my body.

To be honest, this really scared me. I was the sole financial provider for my family. I was literally forced to change. I also didn’t have all the answers, but I knew it would not be a quick fix (if fixable at all). Not the place I wanted to be in, but my focus was now on getting myself healthy.

Everyone who knew me or met me was completely shocked that I had “energy issues” because I was still so active and intense. But now my energy is a commodity that needs to be spent on the things that really matter.

I actually view this diagnosis as a rare gift. It’s forced me to get focused on how to manage and increase my energy so I can maximize my results both on the road and at home.

UNDER THE HOOD

Once I was grounded (literally), I was forced to begin asking deeper questions, the answers to which were very revealing to me. Those close to me were ready to confront me in a loving way to lead me to the truth about myself.

There was this underlying stress to always perform, always be at my best, and “be on.” There were all these expectations that I ultimately realized were self-imposed. Others saw my results or my on-stage persona, not the off-stage toll it was taking on me.

Why did I feel the need to push all the time? What had once been my secret sauce had become my poison.

I asked myself, “What do I actually do when I ‘rest’? I’m always doing something. I didn’t know how to be still or just be with others. This is not right.” I felt lonely, empty, drained, discouraged, confused, paralyzed, and humbled. And I’m not even in touch with my feelings!

I didn’t hear of high performers on the road getting sleep, taking breaks, and having downtime. I didn’t know how to refuel myself with all I was asking and taking from myself. I deeply lacked true rest, the very thing that would heal my body, mind, and soul.

Finally, I began to really look at myself as I was, not as I thought I had to be. Yes, there were expectations, but who had set them? I realized I had let others set my expectations for myself, and it was exhausting.

IT CAN BE DONE

Slowly, every part of me began to heal. I was on a strict rest and supplement protocol that was brutal yet necessary. Through nontraditional medicine and a holistic practitioner named Treva Thompson of Living Tree Health and Wellness, I began to see my body literally regain life and energy. I began to have hope.

Ironically, my character was deepened along with my faith during this journey. I’ve learned to listen to my body—really listen. What does it need right now?

For a driven, high performer, this is a drastic change of operation. But it’s necessary, and it literally changed and saved my life.

There are many of you Road Warriors out there who are like me. Some part of my story is your story. You’re somewhere along my journey. My hope is you find enlightenment, encouragement, and hope in knowing there is someone else out there like you.

I get you. I am you, Road Warrior.

I’m back on the road and living a completely different road lifestyle. I no longer view a trip as a vacation but as my vocation. I’m the “one of these guys is not like the other” guy when traveling. And I love it. There are enough of those other guys out there, and I’m on a mission to challenge and inspire more of them—more of you—to stop going off-road on the road.

What is a Business Travel Performance Expert?

The road is its own animal. If someone doesn’t travel for work, they simply don’t understand the challenges of a business traveler. The road is about performance in your work, that’s a given, but also in the energy you bring to each and every interaction. And being able to perform at an optimal level is what a Business Travel Performance Expert brings to the Road Warrior.

The ultimate goal is to help a business traveler to succeed at what matters most in their work, their own health, and their home life with those they love back home. But it takes a Road Warrior to help a Road Warrior.

I’m a Road Warrior. My father was a Road Warrior. I’ve done travel horribly at times, I’ve killed it and me on the road and I have the story to prove it…

WHAT’S NEXT?

I love options.

So, depending if you’re on your own pursuit to become an Elite Road Warrior or your company is behind you and on your side to invest into you, choose accordingly.

Interview With Chad Allen – Nourish & Flourish Cycle

Here’s what is on this week’s Podcast…

Episode 020

Have you ever considered how you take care of yourself and doing your best work?

This is an interview with Chad Allen, an editorial director of a major publisher by day and an entrepreneur by night.

In this episode you’ll discover:

  • What is the Nourish and Flourish concept and where did it come from?
  • How does the cycle relate to your WHY?
  • Why are most of us not nourishing enough?
  • What does it take to do our best work?
  1. Read on for the written part of the podcast episode or….
  2. Listen to the episode HERE

It’s Go Time!

 Guest Introduction – 1:39

Common Friends:

Jonathan Milligan -writes on productivity at www.JonathanMilligan.com and on how to go from a novice to a professional blogger at www.BloggingYourPassion.com

Mike Kim – is a personal brand expert and creator of The Pivot Course and you can find out more at www.MikeKim.com

Question One – 2:26
You’re an editorial director for a major publisher by day and an entrepreneur by night, how are you able to do both of these at such a high level?

The importance of connecting with your spouse on a consistent basis and speak to their fears as best as you can.

Question Two – 6:00
What would you say drains your energy and recharges your energy especially having to do two different roles?

Drains – MEETINGS especially back to back / lack of sleep

Family Dinner always asks: LOVE / LOW / LEARN
1. What did you LOVE about today?
2. What was your LOW today?
3. What did you LEARN today?

Question Three – 7:29
What would you say between nutrition and fitness / movement is your biggest challenge right now?

Fitness – it’s prioritizing it

He has a client who uses writing as a reward for working out to motivate him to workout.
Question Four – 8:50
You have this concept called Nourish and Flourish, where did it come from for you?

The importance of the rhythmic balance in life led to the Nourish and Flourish concept.

Question Five – 10:53
What then is the Nourish and Flourish and how does that relate to your why?

Chad Allen Why Example – I feel deeply called to help creative people do their best work

The 1st part of the Nourish Cycle is understanding your why – because when you’re tired but you know you gotta do something, getting connected with your WHY statement can get you past the roadblock.

How are we doing taking care of ourselves? – sense of mission / eating well / something fun planned / reading a really good book / praying or meditating

Question Six – 13:33
Most of us are not “nourishing enough” would you say?

“Extravagant Self-Care”

Flourish – The How – what’s my method? – have I blocked off time for my work / realistic goals with deadlines / content bucket / know your process / limit your distractions

Sometimes a little change can be so much of a difference

“Activation Trigger” – example: putting your workout clothes out the night before to help him get up and go the next morning

Question Seven – 16:29
What does it take for us to do our best work?

We can get things done even worn out but when we compare it to when we’re at our best (great night of sleep and healthy breakfast), and this will make a dramatic difference

Example: getting enough sleep equivalent to winning the lottery

We all have our “art” to give to the world

It’s too important to give anything less than our best to that effort

Progress not Perfection

Key Quote: “Your failure to take care of yourselves has real consequences for you and the people in your life you’re serving and influencing”

Question Eight – 20:34
We’re of no benefit to anyone if we don’t take care ourselves, is that correct, Chad?

Sadly, often times we have to hit that point to wake up

Hopefully you can make changes to sustain the level of creativity needed

Question Nine – 21:48
You created a resource for us, can you tell us about that?

Nourish and Flourish Self-Assessment and Nourish Action Guide – www.ChadRAllen.com/Energy

Question Ten – 23:17
Any Closing Thoughts for us today?
